Create a bedroom sanctuary

As our lives become more and more fast paced, so too do we yearn for a peaceful space to reflect, contemplate or just be. For many this space is their bedroom. What many people don’t realise however is that to create a bedroom sanctuary that is beautifully furnished and accessorized does not actually take a lot of time or money. By adding a few well-placed statement furniture pieces, objets and accessories you too can create a space that reflects your personality and gives you a sense of peace and serenity.

Whether you choose to have a mirror as a statement above your headboard or a feminine mirror for your dressing table, every bedroom needs one. Select an ornately framed mirror for a more traditional bedroom or a modern beveled mirror for a contemporary look.

In this department it is easy to go over the top but I always feel that less is more. Look for objets that are beautiful but also useful. Scented candles are always top of my list because they cast a beautiful glow and infuse a gorgeous scent into the bedroom. My room also always contains flowers or foliage from my garden. Which is why vases are always a good accessory to keep handy.

Never underestimate the power of quality wallpaper. Choose wallpaper with hints of metallics or incorporate stripes and patterns in your bedroom in an understated yet truly feminine manner to make your bedroom a luxurious sanctuary.

Another favourite accessory for my bedroom are scatter cushions, whether for a couch or the bed or both. I don’t go overboard but prefer two or three really good quality, well made scatter cushions that bring the rooms theme to life a bit more. I adore oversized cushions but I also love to mix them up with smaller sized or rectangular shaped cushions.

One of my favourite décor items of all times is a well-placed chandelier. Whatever the size of your room or your style preference, a chandelier will always make a statement. Choose to hang an elaborate chandelier above your bed or a wonderful idea is to hang two smaller chandeliers above the bedside tables as individual lamps.

Lamps are a fantastic way to create mood lighting in your bedroom. Opt for a standing lamp next to a wingback chair for example to create the perfect reading spot. Or select a luxurious pair of table lamps for your bedside table. We love lamps with a metallic base and a shade covered in good quality fabric.

One can never have too many flowers in your bedroom. Chose a spot that you can see from bed for a gorgeous arrangement of your favourite flowers. Or opt for a smaller vase next to your bed. For year round beautiful flowers I suggest a soft touch silk arrangement.

An ottoman is a beautiful and practical piece of furniture to have in a bedroom. Not only can they exude luxury if covered in a gorgeous fabric, but nowadays many ottomans also serve as storage. I have an ottoman at the end of my bed in which I store all my linen and towels.

Mirrored furniture

If you choose to place mirrored furniture anywhere in your home, it must be your bedroom. Whether you opt for the more antiqued mirror finish or a high gloss finish, mirrored furniture is the ultimate luxury item. Select from bedside pedestals, consoles or even an antiqued mirror screen for dividing the room.

Whatever design style you decide to go for, make sure your bedroom reflects your personality, and have fun with textures and colour.

Until next time.
