Favourite project to date:
I am enjoying working on my current projects. All the homes are contemporary styled architecture embracing the South African climate with large window and doors and fantastic double volume entrances which are just begging for fantastic sculptural lighting. I am working with some wonderful clients who are open to exploring something different and looking for that WOW factor.
Fabric I love to work with:
I love working with Romo fabrics especially their newly launched range. I love their glamour and their sophisticated and extensive colour ranges in their plain fabrics. They have great edgy shapes and textures in their design.
Favorite room to decorate:
It would definitely be the master bedroom. It is rewarding to create a sensual and relaxing space in which to begin and end the day.
My dream home:
I deeply admire Frank Lloyd Wrights Fallingwater House and would love to create my South African equivalent of that. There are so many aspects to that home that are still so relevant today such as using the surrounding materials to build with and integrating those materials into the interior décor. I enjoy the blurring of the lines between indoor and outdoor, and the way the kitchen is the heart of the family home which defines the direction of the décor. I love the philosophy of respecting and understanding the beauty and integrity of the materials that you are working with and keeping close to nature for your inspiration. I would love to take those concepts deeper and explore nature on a molecular level and to work décor around those shapes and textures but keep it tightly South African.
What makes you a unique interior designer?
I spend a lot of time at the conceptual stage in the design process. It forms the basis of a coherent design, so mood boards are a very important part of the design process for me. A good mood board ensures that I don’t stray from the core shapes, colours and textures. Also, working through a comprehensive mood board enables me to understand my clients preferences up front and helps to get us onto the same page quickly.
Favourite Isabelina piece in-store at the moment:
It would have to be the contemporary genuine crystal chandeliers. A genuine crystal chandelier is like wearing diamond earrings. They can be worn with ripped jeans or a black dress. It’s pure glamour that always looks fabulous. In the same way a crystal chandelier will look beautiful with a polished ducco dining room table and plush velvet chairs, it can also look fabulous with raw distressed wood and concrete.
